Acne Imposters

Folliculitis- An inflammation of hair follicles caused by bacteria, yeast, or fungus.

- Symptoms: Small, red or white-headed bumps around hair follicles that can be itchy or tender.

- Treatment: Antibacterial or antifungal cleansers, topical antibiotics, or oral medications for severe cases. Avoiding tight clothing and maintaining hygiene also helps.

Staph Infection (Staphylococcus aureus) - A bacterial infection that can cause skin abscesses or boils, often mistaken for acne.

- Symptoms: Red, swollen, painful pustules or boils that can ooze pus. It can become serious if untreated.

- Treatment: Topical or oral antibiotics, proper wound care, and draining abscesses if needed. In severe cases, medical attention is necessary.

Keratosis Pilaris-  A common, harmless skin condition where hair follicles get plugged by keratin.

- Symptoms: Rough, tiny bumps on the skin, often on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks, that resemble goosebumps.

- Treatment: Exfoliating with products containing AHAs or BHAs, moisturizing with creams containing urea or lactic acid, and using gentle cleansers.

Perioral Dermatitis- An inflammatory rash around the mouth or eyes, often triggered by topical steroids, cosmetics, or toothpaste.

- Symptoms: Red, scaly, and bumpy rash around the mouth, nose, or eyes that may burn or itch.

- Treatment: Discontinuing topical steroids, using non-comedogenic skincare products, and applying prescribed topical or oral antibiotics.

Sebaceous Hyperplasia- Overgrowth of sebaceous glands that creates small, flesh-colored or yellowish bumps.

- Symptoms: Soft, round bumps that are not painful but may resemble acne. They often occur on the forehead, nose, or cheeks.

Steatocystoma Multiplex- A rare condition characterized by multiple benign cysts formed from sebaceous glands.

- Symptoms: Smooth, yellowish cysts filled with an oily substance, often found on the chest, upper arms, or face.

- Treatment: Removal via surgical excision, drainage, or laser therapy. Oral retinoids may be prescribed to reduce cyst formation.

These conditions often mimic acne but have distinct causes and treatments, so it's crucial to differentiate them for proper care.
